About
Visitors passing through Mt. Croghan today may see a quiet intersection, a handful of buildings, and a close-knit rural community. What many do not realize is that Mt. Croghan was once a thriving center of commerce, education, and community life in northern Chesterfield County.
During the first half of the twentieth century, Mt. Croghan served as the hub of a prosperous farming region. More than twenty businesses operated in town, providing goods and services to local residents and surrounding communities. Livestock auctions were held at the local livery stable, while a blacksmith shop, cotton gins, a concrete block factory, an axe-handle factory, and a corn mill contributed to the area’s economic growth.
The town was also home to a successful bank, post office, barber shop, drug store, doctor’s office, department store, furniture store, general store, grocery stores, service stations, and various repair shops. These businesses made Mt. Croghan an important destination for commerce and daily life throughout the region.
Beyond business, Mt. Croghan was known for its strong sense of community and commitment to education. Much of the town’s social and cultural life centered around the Mt. Croghan School, originally known as Mt. Croghan Graded School. The school developed a reputation for academic excellence and was a leader in educational achievement within Chesterfield County.

Students participated in a wide range of activities, including music programs, drama productions, debates, athletics, chapel programs, and educational field trips. A school improvement committee helped support the school’s growth and success, while conduct, character, and academic achievement were emphasized as important parts of a student’s education.
The 1920s were particularly active years for the community. Residents enjoyed school events, church socials, sporting competitions, community suppers, card parties, and gatherings where neighbors came together to socialize and enjoy one another’s company. These events reflected the strong community spirit that characterized life in Mt. Croghan.
In 1925, the town celebrated the arrival of electricity and street lighting, marking a significant milestone in its development. That same year, a new school auditorium was dedicated and became a gathering place for performances, community events, and weekly motion picture showings.
Today, many of these stories and historical records are preserved in the Mt. Croghan Museum. Visitors are encouraged to explore the museum’s collections and scrapbooks to learn more about the people, businesses, schools, and events that helped shape the rich history of Mt. Croghan.
